Glenridding Dodd - Route One

 

Start - Glenridding NY 386 169 Distance - 1 mile Ascent - 950 feet Time - 50 minutes

 

 

The LDNPA car park in Glenridding at the start of this walk
Passing the Travellers Rest on Greenside Road.  The first objective is to climb to the low point on the horizon between the south east ridge of Heron Pike on the left and the steep slopes of Glenridding Dodd on the right
Above the Travellers Rest the road divides, the left branch descends to Rattlebeck Bridge, the way ahead continues uphill towards Rake Cottages

The path starts beyond a cattle grid and gate, zig-zagging onto a green track which leads towards the upper terrace of cottages

Leave the green track at a small marker post which points to the start of a path at the foot of a scree slope
The path rises steeply to the west of Blaes Crag before bearing to the right onto a level shoulder behind the crag

From the level shoulder behind Blaes Crag, The Rake path leads easily up to the col between Heron Pike and Glenridding Dodd

The main path reaches the col at a gate in a wall and continues on towards Mossdale
The path to Glenridding Dodd follows the line of the wall for a short distance across its western slopes

The wall is followed for a short distance to the point where it starts to descend into Mossdale.  From there the path makes an acute right turn and climbs steadily towards the summit of Glenridding Dodd
The summits of Catstycam and Helvellyn Lower Man appear over the slopes of Birkhouse Moor and Heron Pike
